Missions & History

Established in 1989, the Center for Korean Studies at Stony Brook University builds on one of the earliest Korean Studies programs in the United States, with courses offered since 1982. The Center advances education, research, and public engagement on Korea through its language, history, culture, philosophy, and society.

Committed to excellence in teaching and scholarship, the Center places particular emphasis on Korean Humanism, connecting Korea's intellectual traditions with its modern and contemporary developments. Through innovative academic programs, research initiatives, publications, and cultural events, the Center fosters intercultural dialogue and promotes a deeper understanding of Korea in both academic and public communities.
