STEM Adventures: Miller Place High School Tour of Stony Brook R&D Park
May 22, 2024
Miller Place High School sent a cohort of five teachers and 44 students to Stony Brook University’s R&D Park on May 18. Led by Shannon Matura, a New York State Master Teacher, the group rotated throughout the labs of hydrogen, combustion, power electronics, and battery storage. Representing classes such as AP Physics, AP Biology, AP Chemistry and honors iterations, the students sought renewable energy applications of their advanced studies in foundational sciences.

Afterwards, the visit shifted to the Center of Excellence in Wireless Information Technology (CEWIT), whereby both AI and robotic technologies  were approached in a hands-on capacity via the world’s largest virtual reality deck and the  Home of the Future.

Led by teachers Kuri DeFede and Andrew Woolsey, 25 students first toured the combustion, battery, and hydrogen labs at the Advanced Energy Center before heading to CEWIT to experience the Reality Deck and AI-powered robotics with Sunrise Technologies.

On April 10, students from the after-school Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) program at Riverhead High School visited the Advanced Energy and Research Technology Center (AERTC). The 16 eleventh grade students, led by their teacher Laiba Bilal, toured energy labs in the disciplines of battery storage, hydrogen, and combustion.

12th Advanced Energy Conference 2022
The 12^th Advanced Energy Conference series featured an event at the Marriott Marquis in New York City on Sept. 7-9, 2022, to follow the virtual conference that took place on June 9-10, 2021. The theme for this two-part conference was charting the course for energy, as we map our path to a future energy portfolio by exploring technology innovations, key policy changes, new business models, and more.

The17 ^th  International Conference & Expo for emerging technologies for a smarter world (CEWIT2021)

The CEWIT Conference continued its tradition of providing the premier international forum   for presentations of original research results as well as the exchange and transfer of innovative applications of emerging technologies in  Machine Learning, Artificial Intellegence, Blockchain, Infrastructure and Cybersecurity,  and Computerized Medicine - five of the most critical components of a smarter global environment. It hosted renowned speakers, presenters, and panelists from industry, academia, and government, and an impressive international audience at the event.

Innovation Bootcamp 2021
The Long Island Innovation Boot Camp was initiated at Stony Brook University fourteen years ago, to help evaluate the commercial readiness of a new technology - to help propel ideas into creation.  On September 20, 2021, the annual event resumed after a year off due to COVID. Under new guidance by a professional I-CORPS team delivering the lean-launchpad program, selected start-up teams worked virtually over a ten-day period, which included three full days with instructional workshops and homework.  The teams worked alongside experienced patent attorneys, business professionals, MBA students and the professional I-CORPS team and were hands-on through a series of modules structured to probe the commercial potential of a technology, ending with presentations to a panel of entrepreneurs and early-stage investors.

The NSF I-Corps has trained more than 3,745 individuals in 1,315 teams from 271 institutions that have created 644 companies and gotten $301M in funding. To learn more about the 2021 program or to inquire about future Boot Camps, click here.

The Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology (CEWIT) hosts its fifth annual student hackathon bringing over 300 regional hackers, industry sponsorship commitments, and hands-on tech talks and workshops together virtually for a two-day technical challenge awarding over $5K in prizes. The topic this year is Innovating Through the Pandemic.

The 16th  International Conference on Emerging Technologies for a Smarter World

Organized by the New York State Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology (CEWIT) at Stony Brook University, this international conference is a destination for researchers, innovators and entrepreneurs, across borders and disciplines.  Last year’s CEWIT2019 conference attracted over 250 industry and academic participants from 4 countries. Over seventeen presenters took the podium in various sessions. 

Continuing the tradition since the inception of our conference in 2003, CEWIT2020 will be a premier forum for presentations of cutting-edge research as well as the exchange and transfer of emerging technologies and innovative applications. Machine Learning, Blockchain, Security, & Social Impact
February 14 - 16

The Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology (CEWIT) hosted its fourth annual interdisciplinary student hackathon bringing over 150 regional hackers, $40K in industry sponsorship commitments, and over 25 hands-on tech talks and workshops together for a two-day technical challenge awarding over $5K in prizes to the most innovative, most ambitious, most original and most health-conscious  project — at Stony Brook University.  The main topics were technologies impacting  any vertical market. This included but not limited to: security, health-care, machine learning, A.I., blockchain, social impact, IoT, etc. 

The two-day hack over President’s Day Weekend was designed in conjunction with core industry partners, sponsors, and member entrepreneurs to select scenarios that will have a direct, real-world application to their product portfolios.

Hack@CEWIT '19 takes place at the Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology (CEWIT) at Stony Brook University on February 15-17, 2019, Presidents Day Weekend.  It is open to all undergraduate and graduate students in colleges and universities across the US and Canada. CEWIT partners with MLH to host the event which features an interactive speaker series; hands-on, deep-dive workshops; industry hacker guru programs; games; multimedia experiences; and opportunities for recruitment with top industry prizes for the most innovative, most ambitious, most original, and most industry-applicable hacks.

A hackathon is a design-focused, sprint-like event in which future engineers collaborate intensively on engineering projects over a extremely short period. These events aim to inspire current and future innovators.  CEWIT’s industry partners and sponsors will work to select scenarios that will have a direct, real-world application to their product portfolios. This year's hackathon will primarily focus on Machine Learning & AI goals, including Robotics challenges, to advance enterprising student-powered engineering solutions.  Hack@CEWIT is designed in conjunction with our core industry partners, sponsors, and member entrepreneurs to select scenarios that will have a direct, real-world application to their product portfolios.

You've worked for a while in an area you are very familiar with and have some terrific ideas on improvement.

You are working in an area you are restless in - and want to start your own business with great ideas you have collected over the years.

You are now retired after years in the business with plenty of time to think about those ideas you've had and see if indeed, you could market them.

How do you know if the idea you have is marketable?  How do you know if the risk is worth it? How do you attract capital? How would you go from the "idea" to the “product”?  

This workshop is geared toward assisting you in deciding if this concept is worth pursuing.  Come hear from entrepreneurs who have succeeded and how they decided to move forward with their conceptions. Hear from financiers as to what they are looking for. Hear from business people on how to get going on a business plan.

Energy Business Opportunities in NY State

The Center for Integrated Electrical Energy Systems (CIEES) at Stony Brook University and the Center for Future Energy Systems (CFES) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute will be holding a one day Workshop on   “Energy Business Opportunities in NY State” on October 5, 2017. The event, starting at 10:30 AM will be held at the Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology (CEWIT), 1500 Stony Brook Rd, Stony Brook, NY 11794.

CIEES and CFES are a part of the New York State (NYS) network of Centers for Advanced Technology (CAT). The goal of this workshop is to enable the New York State energy businesses to learn how to leverage CIEES and CFES resources to boost   economic growth in the upcoming energy environment.  The workshop will start with a morning session outlining   the benefits that an energy   CAT   could provide to businesses, by showcasing specific examples of successful CAT-industry projects.

The afternoon sessions will include a series of panel discussions on current status and opportunities   that the evolution of the different energy areas offers. The targeted audience is the NYS businesses, utilities, policymakers and academic faculty.

Advanced Energy Center Symposium Series: Offshore Wind

Long Island Innovation Boot Camp
March 22, 23 & 30, 2017
The Long Island Innovation Boot Camp was initiated at Stony Brook University to propel ideas past these barriers to new venture creation.  The two and a half day event teams experienced patent attorneys, business professionals and MBA students with the researchers around whose patented technologies new companies might be built.  The teams work hands-on through a series of modules structured to probe the commercial potential of a technology, ending with presentations to a panel of entrepreneurs and early stage investors.  The researchers/inventors walk away with the answers to two threshold questions: Can this technology become a saleable product, and do I want to be the entrepreneur who builds a company around it?

Since its inception in 2008, the Boot Camp – the Long Island event of the Pre-Seed Workshop (www.preseedworkshop.com), originated by Mark Wilson and Judy Albers – has analyzed over sixty technologies with the help of more than 130 regional professionals, and assisted in the formation of numerous technology start-up companies on Long Island.  The Boot Camp’s annual kickoff event is held in conjunction with the Long Island Technology Hall of Fame dinner every March to introduce the technology entrepreneurs of the future to their most successful predecessors.
