Founded in 2017, the Center for Hellenic Studies educates Stony Brook University students with the values and traditions of Hellenism, and aims to form strong bonds with the Greek-American communities of Long Island. Stay connected by reading our annual Newsletter (2024-2025).

Events

Throughout the year, the Center hosts guest lectures, concerts, and celebrations that bring Hellenic history, literature, art, and culture to the community, including annual traditions like the Hellenic Film Festival.

Peter V. Tsantes Endowed Professorship

Dr. Simos Zenios was named the Peter V. Tsantes Endowed Professor in Greek Literature and Language in 2024. The professorship was established in 2013 to promote the study of Hellenism and supports a plethora of activities on campus.

Minor in Hellenic Studies

The Minor in Hellenic Studies is an interdisciplinary program for students interested in obtaining a broad background in Hellenic culture. Students will take courses in Modern Greek language, literature, history, and culture, and other disciplines relevant to Hellenic Studies in coordination with the Minor Director.

Greek and Cypriot Student Association

The Greek & Cypriot Student Association brings students together through cultural traditions like annual OXI Day and Greek Independence Day Celebrations, and other cultural events focused on Hellenic music, dance, food, and community.

Scholarship Opportunities

The Center for Hellenic Studies offers several yearly scholarships, including tuition support for students of Hellenic Studies and students planning to Study Abroad in Greece.

Greek and Cypriot-American Immigrants Essay Contest

Supported by the AHEPA Port Jefferson Chapter, this annual essay competition focuses on the experiences of immigrants of Greek and Cypriot descent who settled on Long Island, as well as the stories of first‑generation Greek Americans. The contest opens each year in January and winners are announced in May.

Summer Abroad in Greece

Immerse yourself in Greek language and culture with Stony Brook's faculty led Summer Abroad Program in Athens, where every day includes a step outside the classroom and onto a historic site. From the Acropolis to Syntagma Square, you'll learn history while exploring museums, landmarks, and UNESCO World Heritage sites alongside your classmates.
