EUR 447.01 Directed Readings in European Studies
The course will focus on Greek history, from Ancient times to now, aimed to understand
how this history has shaped Modern Greece, greek customs, and some of the ways of
life. We will also read Greek Fairytales (Παραμύθια) in simplified Greek which will

MAT 487.06 Independent Study in Special Topics
The course will take a tour through some of the mathematics of the ancient Hellenic
world, focusing on deductions as to the shape of the world and scale/distance to neighboring
objects in the solar system. This will take students through works of Aristotle, Pythagoras,
Eratosthenes, Apollonius, Archimedes, Aristarchus among others. Along with following
their methods, the course will present a more modern spin on both the proofs and questions.
The course is intended for a broad audience, with basic knowledge of geometric and
algebra, for understanding original arguments, and calculus, used for a modern perspective.
