ABOUT FUTURE SCHOLARS

The Stony Brook Future Scholars (SBFS) Program is a five-year, pre-college initiative designed to foster academic growth, social development, and personal enrichment among students beginning in the 7th grade and continuing through high school.

Components of the program also include academic support, enrichment workshops and tutoring, leadership development, and mentoring. Students participate in programming throughout the school year designed to help them succeed in life post high-school graduation. Students participate in activities that introduce them to various career fields, explore new found interests and enhance their skillsets.

Each year, students are selected in partnership with five local districts:

  • Riverhead Central School District
  • Bridgehampton Union Free School District
  • Tuckahoe Common School District
  • Southampton Union Free School District
  • Hampton Bays Public Schools

The program is designed to prepare students for college success. Upon successful completion of the program, students who are accepted to Stony Brook University (SBU) will be eligible for a four-year, tuition-free education through a combination of federal, state, and private grants. Criteria to qualify for the free tuition at SBU through SBFS:

  1. Students need to be accepted to the university.
  2. Program participation will be taken into consideration as part of the holistic review process.
  3. If accepted, students will receive a scholarship that covers the full cost of tuition after other aid is applied (Pell, TAP, Excelsior). This does not cover housing or fees.
  4. If the student takes part in the Seawolves at Suffolk program (Joint admission), the scholarship can be applied for the last two years at Stony Brook.
