Biography

Joel Hurowitz is a geochemist and planetary scientist working at the forefront of the exploration of Mars. Specializing in understanding the processes of sedimentary rock formation and evolution, he has worked extensively on the ongoing Mars Exploration Rover mission. Recently, he became the Deputy Principal Investigator for the Planetary Instrument for X-ray Lithochemistry (PIXL), which measures the chemical composition of rocks and minerals and was selected by NASA to fly on the Mars 2020 Rover mission.
