Biography

Francesca Spedalieri is a scholar, translator and director. She received her PhD in Theatre from The Ohio State University and is currently an Assistant Professor of English and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at SUNY–Stony Brook. Her research focuses on contemporary Italian theatre, theatre and activism, and translation/adaptation. In 2014, she spearheaded the Emma Dante Project at Ohio State, which marked the North American debut of Dante’s company.

Her recent publications include a chapter on Emma Dante’s theatre and the ethics of gendered representation in Italian theatre in La Riflessione Etica nel Teatro Contemporaneo Italiano, and an essay on Sicilian and Italian in Dante’s mPalermu published in Delos: A Journal of Translation and World Literature. She most recently translated/adapted Stefano Massini’s 7 Minutes for the New York City-based company Waterwell. Her translations of selected plays by Dante appear in the 2020 anthology mPalermu, Dancers, and Other Plays.
