Stephanie Hong studies poverty, social policy, and child and family well-being. Using quantitative methods including quasi-experimental approaches, she focuses on how public policies that support family income and publicly-funded early care and education programs can improve children's health and development, reduce maltreatment risk, and support parental health and well-being, particularly among marginalized populations. Her past and current research has examined programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, tax credits (Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit), childcare subsidies, and New York City’s universal pre-kindergarten.
