Howard Schneider is the founding Dean of the School of Journalism and Executive Director of the University's Center for News Literacy, which developed the nation's first undergraduate course in how to be a discerning news consumer. The news literacy course has been completed by more than 15,000 students in the U.S. and in 10 countries. Before transitioning to higher education in 2006, Howie spent 35 years as a working journalist for Newsday, a top-tier New York newspaper -- where for 18 years he served as managing editor and then editor. Under his editorial leadership, the newspaper won eight Pulitzer Prizes and became one of the first newspapers in the nation to create news websites.
