Izabela Kalinowska-Blackwood

Izabela Kalinowska-Blackwood is an Associate Professor in the Department of English
at Stony Brook University. Her research focuses on colonial and postcolonial studies
in the context of Eastern European and post-Soviet societies, nationalism, and decolonization.
She is the author of Between East and West: Polish and Russian Nineteenth-Century
Travel to the Orient (University of Rochester Press, 2004), along with numerous articles
related to her main areas of interest, primarily in Polish and Eastern European cinemas.
Kalinowska co-founded the Flying University for Ukrainian Students—an educational
initiative that supports Ukrainian students by offering intensive online humanities
courses taught by American professors. She was a Fulbright Fellow at the Centre for
East European Studies at the University of Warsaw during the 2024–25 academic year.
