Merna Melad

About

Merna Melad is a PhD student in Department of Biomedical Engineering, and enjoys teaching and mentoring. She joined ECLP to better understand how the skills she has developed through research, leadership, and mentorship could translate into different professional settings.

Melad was immediately drawn to the program’s student-led structure. Hearing graduate students facilitate conversations about challenges they had experienced themselves created a comfortable environment in which participants could openly discuss the uncertainties that often accompany planning for life after graduate school.

Through ECLP, Melad expanded her understanding of the opportunities available to individuals with scientific training. Informational interviews introduced her to career paths she had not previously considered and helped her move beyond viewing her options as simply academia or industry. The experience also strengthened her confidence approaching professionals, initiating conversations, and building connections at conferences and other professional events.

Favorite Part

“My favorite part was hearing from people with different experiences and career paths. I also really enjoyed the discussions within the group because everyone brought a different perspective. You often learn as much from the other participants as you do from the formal activities.”

Advice to Future Participants

“Be curious and take advantage of the opportunity to explore without feeling like you need to have your entire career figured out. Talk to people, ask questions, and be open to career paths you may never have considered before. The more you participate and engage with the group, the more valuable the experience becomes.”
