Types of Appeals

PLEASE NOTE - THIS IS NOT THE PROCESS FOR ACADEMIC EXCEPTIONS. YOU MUST USE THE PETITION FOR ACADEMIC EXCEPTIONS FORM FOR RETAKES, LATE ADDS, LATE WITHDRAWALS, REINSTATEMENT FROM SUSPENSION, ETC.

Students in the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Journalism, and School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences have the opportunity to make an exception request and/or appeal to the  Senior Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education.

Examples of special exceptions considered include:

  • Substitute a DEC course or SBC category
  • Accept an independent study course towards a general education requirement
  • Allow more than 12 graduate credits to count towards the undergraduate degree
  • Graduate under a pre-existing curriculum
  • Request conditional reinstatement from dismissal

To make such a request, complete this Google form with your request and upload any relevant documentation, if applicable. For certain requests, support from a Stony Brook University faculty member is required but please note that a letter of support from a faculty or professional staff member does not assure approval of any request for an exception to University policies, procedures, or deadlines.

To appeal a denied Petition for Academic Exceptions, you must submit a new petition to the Committee on Academic Standing and Appeals. This includes  a new statement and new documentation or evidence that is different from the documentation submitted in the initial petition. Specific instructions on how to appeal a denied petition are provided in the decision email.

Please refer to the Academic Integrity Policy website for more information on Academic Judiciary Appeals.

Under SUNY's Seamless Transfer Policy, if you do not agree with Stony Brook University's initial decision on the granting or placement of credit earned at a prior SUNY institution, you have the right to submit an appeal to Stony Brook University.

To make such a request, complete this Google Form with your appeal and upload any relevant documentation such as course descriptions, syllabi, transcripts etc. For certain requests, support from a Stony Brook University faculty member is required. Please note that a letter of support from a faculty or professional staff member does not guarantee approval of a request for an exception to University policies, procedures, or deadlines.

If the decision remains unchanged after review by Stony Brook University, you may appeal the campus decision to the SUNY System Administration Provost. For more information, visit the SUNY Transfer Appeal website.
