  1. Minutes of the November 14, 2016 meeting were approved.
  2. Diversity Initiative
    1. Origins of diversity initiative reviewed.
    2. Two concerns to be addressed
      1. Are outcomes important?
        1. General consensus is yes, however concerns were expressed that perhaps there are too many outcomes. Review of outcomes needed. Concern expressed that initiative should not teach people how to think.
      2. Implementation.
        1. Discussion ensued regarding desire to make any requirements be incorporated into current curriculum, and not in addition to current requirements. Need expressed to stay credit neural, particularly for those in STEM where programs are already burdened with significant accreditation requirements.
        2. Suggested places are SBC (USA, USB 101, GLO).
        3. Suggestion to align with SBC designator.
        4. Discussion about whether implementation should it be handled at the department level or school-wide, or woven throughout major.
        5. This is a Stony Brook mandate, not SUNY.
        6. Holistic approach, especially throughout social sciences.
    3. Next steps
      1. Madeline will try to revise outcomes associated with initiative.
      2. Refer matter back to SBC committee to make this credit neutral.
  3. Meeting adjourned at 5:00 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
William Stanley
