  • Program Details

    SUNY Korea, established in 2012 with approval from South Korea’s Ministry of Education, is the first American university in the country. Formed through a partnership with Stony Brook University, the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), the SUNY system, and the South Korean government, SUNY Korea offers Stony Brook undergraduate and graduate programs in Applied Mathematics and Statistics, Business, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Technological Systems Management. Both the Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering programs are ABET-accredited.

    Living Arrangements Students may select on-campus housing, off-campus student housing, or may commute if living locally.
    Visa Requirements

    An entry visa may be required for non-Korean citizens and may depend on your passport country of issuance. Korean National Students: Students enrolled in FLY are eligible to request Stony Brook University-issued Form I-20 to obtain F-1 student status for the semester in which they will study at Stony Brook University in-person. If deemed eligible, you will receive an I-20, enabling you to initiate the visa application process. It's important to note that while you can apply for your F-1 visa now to accommodate for visa processing and security clearance delays, the consulate cannot issue the visa stamp in your passport until 120 days before the program start date.

    Academic Information

    The FLY SUNY Korea Program will give preference to the following majors:







    • Applied Mathematics and Statistics
    • Business Management
    • Computer Science
    • Electrical Engineering
    • Mechanical Engineering
    • Technology and Society




    Stony Brook University Academic Advisors will help students build their first semester schedule from a list of approved courses to ensure degree progress begins on FLY.



    Students must take a minimum of 3 courses taught in English.




    Courses taught at SUNY Korea are Stony Brook courses. 

    Students can review available classes through the SOLAR System at http://www.stonybrook.edu/solarsystem

    SBU students must consult with their Academic Advisors to plan their first-semester course schedule.

     

    Academic Policies
    • Students should only register for recommended courses by their academic advisor
    • Students must maintain full-time status while abroad
    • Grades earned during FLY SUNY Korea calculate towards the student's cumulative GPA and will appear on their transcript
    • Students may not register for courses on a pass/fail basis
    • All participants will receive GLO and EXP+ credit in addition to requirements fulfilled by their coursework

    We are committed to ensuring you have the best possible experience during your FLY program!  While at SUNY Korea, you are still a Seawolf, and our SBU and on-site staff have developed programs and events to build your connection to SBU and ensure a smooth transition when you return to main campus.

    Virtual FLY Orientation

    Before your arrival to SUNY Korea campus, the SBU FLY team will provide a comprehensive orientation on what to expect from your FLY program. Parents/guardians are welcome and encouraged to attend!  Topics covered include:

    Housing Options
    SUNY Korea offers campus housing options. Students who live locally may also choose to commute.
    Cultural Experiences

    The FLY Team and local staff are preparing unique cultural activities and SBU experiences for FLY students at SUNY Korea. Check back for more details.

    Red Hot Fridays

    FLY is bringing this SBU tradition to SUNY Korea! Every Friday at SBU, students, faculty, and staff can be seen wearing red around campus.  FLY students are encouraged to wear red or SBU logo gear to show your school spirit!  Be sure to tag @sbustudyabroad on Instagram repping your school colors!

    Program Costs

    Tuition and fees for the FLY SUNY Korea program will be billed directly in SOLAR as outlined in the general program details.  Students are also responsible  for expenses associated with international travel and living abroad, including airfare, housing, meals, books, and personal expenses.

    If you’ve been accepted to another U.S. college or university but are unsure whether you can begin in the U.S. this fall, Stony Brook’s Freshman Launch Year (FLY) program offers a unique alternative. Begin your first semester at one of Stony Brook’s global locations, earning transferable college credit in a dynamic international setting. These credits can be applied toward a Stony Brook degree through a simplified application process, or transferred to your original institution with an official Stony Brook transcript.
