Alumnus Ken Marcus ’71 Brings Seawolf Spirit to Life with Iconic Wolfie Statue

Ken Marcus ’71 was inspired by his time at the University of Michigan, where the iconic block “M” on the Diag has long served as a symbol of school pride. Reflecting on this tradition, Ken envisioned something similar for his alma mater—an enduring focal point that would unite the Stony Brook community and embody its spirit.

A native of Far Rockaway, NY, Ken earned his BA in History from Stony Brook University in 1971. He went on to earn a Master’s in Health Services Administration (MHSA) from the University of Michigan in 1978 and a Juris Doctor from Wayne State University in 1984. Over the years, he built a successful legal career focused on health law, corporate and regulatory affairs, and appellate advocacy. Today, Ken and his wife Andrea reside in Michigan, where they remain deeply connected to both the Michigan and Stony Brook communities. A passionate sports fan, Ken continues to follow the Stony Brook teams and cheers on the Seawolves from afar.

Throughout his life, Ken was moved by the strong campus traditions at Michigan, particularly at the presence of the block “M” in its main campus at Ann Arbor, MI — a gathering place and a beacon of school pride for generations — and wanted to bring that same sense of unity and pride to Stony Brook. After exploring several ideas, one stood out: a statue of Wolfie, Stony Brook’s beloved mascot. More than just a symbol of school spirit, Wolfie represents the energy, resilience and pride that define the Seawolf community.

Thanks to Ken’s vision and generosity, the Wolfie Statue now stands at the heart of the campus on the Academic Mall — a new tradition in the making. This new landmark serves as a welcoming destination where students, faculty, staff, alumni, and visitors can gather, take photos, and celebrate all that it means to be a Seawolf.

Each May, as graduates and their loved ones return to campus to celebrate commencement, the  Wolfie Statue promises to be a beloved backdrop for lasting memories, honoring past achievements and inspiring pride for years to come.

Seawolves Outdoor Adventure Program (SOAP)

The TsaosIn 2021, the Tsaos approached the Division of Student Affairs to contribute to and develop a program that
enhances student life and creates additional opportunities for connection between
Seawolves. The Seawolves Outdoor Adventure Program (SOAP) provides just that, helping students to build connections with other fellow Seawolves in a fun and outdoor environment, and perhaps meet their
friends for life!

Student Emergency Support Fund - David Arpi

"When I initially learned about the Student Emergency Support Fund, I felt it could be a program worth backing. My late wife, Natalie Gubb, and I were graduates of Stony Brook University. It was there that we gained the knowledge, skills, and friendships that set the foundation for our careers and life together. As I delved deeper into the fund's mission, I realized it was offering students facing financial crises the very same chance we had: to complete their education and embark on their life paths. Ultimately, it was the heartfelt testimonials from students who had benefited from this emergency financial support that persuaded me to contribute to the fund."
