Subject: Proposed Changes for Stony Brook Parking 

Good Afternoon Stony Brook Community,

As part of our ongoing effort to improve mobility and parking services for our campus community, the university is exploring a campus-wide, fully paid parking model at Stony Brook proposed to begin in the fall of 2023. Our suggested tiered model and payment for parking will be either by permit (for faculty, staff, students, affiliates, etc.) or via a daily parking rate. 

The details of this tiered parking model were shared today with campus stakeholders, including representation from our various unions and student government. If you would like to view our proposed plan and preliminary details, please visit the Mobility and Parking Services (MAPS) website.

We recognize that the proposed changes will have an impact on our community. However, the reality is that our current parking model is insufficient to fund routine maintenance or customer service improvements for our parking operations. Stony Brook’s parking services are self-funded, meaning that tuition, student transportation fees and SUNY funding are not allocated to support these operations. Despite running in an operational deficit, garage rates have not increased in more than 30 years and during that time, SBU has provided free parking in the majority of our locations. At SBUH, while employees pay for parking in several surface lots, or within the two garages, those rates have also not increased over the last three decades. 

Our proposed model will eliminate our current deficit, cover existing repairs, maintenance and capital expenses, and enable us to replace outdated technology. This suggested parking model will also align us with our peers in the SUNY system and comparable AAU institutions where the overwhelming majority of campuses have a pay-to-park model already in place.
