1.  Celebrate National Postdoc Appreciation Week next Tues, Sept 19, 5pm

National Postdoc Appreciation Week is the eighth annual celebration honoring postdocs and recognizing the contributions they make to research and development in the United States and beyond. At Stony Brook, we will celebrate this year with a reception for all postdocs, your labmates, advisors, and friends on September 19th. Refreshments will be served. 

We hope you can join us!

2.  New Postdocs! Join us for the New Postdoc Welcome, Tues, Sept 19 at 4pm 
The New Postdoc Welcome offers an introduction to Stony Brook to help recently arrived postdocs maximize their postdoctoral experience. All postdocs who have joined us in the past six months are particularly encouraged to attend.

All postdocs who have arrived within the past six months are invited to:
  • Discover the unique aspects of being a postdoc at SBU
  • Learn about resources & benefits for SBU postdocs
  • Meet the staff who can help you make the most

    of your time at Stony Brook
The NPAW Reception will start at 5:00pm for all postdocs. 

3 .  Fundamentals of Bioscience Industry Course Call for Applications

The Fundamentals of the Bioscience Industry Program provides participants with the skills and knowledge they need to transition out of the academic lab into a professional position in the bioscience industry.

This innovative, one semester, evening program is taught by industry professionals through lectures and interactive team projects. Students gain first-hand experience in the development of commercialization strategies around real intellectual property and business issues. This experiential learning process will shed light onto the expanded number of business roles to which scientific skills can be applied.

Benefits of the program include:

  • Learning the process of how a technology becomes a product

  • Increasing your marketability through education beyond the typical classroom

  • Gaining insight into corporate decision making

  • Making connections with industry leaders

  • Access to alumni network with ongoing career opportunities, mentoring and social interactions

Created by the  Center for Biotechnology , this program is targeted towards graduate students and postdocs seeking to facilitate commercial activities within their academic labs or enhance their knowledge of the commercial sector in order to transition into non-academic careers.

4 .  Women in STEM talk Sept 21: 10+ Years of ADVANCE at Michigan Tech

The sponsors for this event, the WINGS (Women In GeoSciences- Nurturing opportunities, Effectiveness, Satisfaction and Leadership) initiative at SoMAS, will hold a catered lunch at 1:30pm (Sep-21) at Endeavour 120, after after the seminar for faculty, postdocs, staff and students to meet with Dr. Huntoon.

1.  NRC Research Associateship Program, Deadline: Nov 15

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine sponsors a number of awards for postdoctoral and senior researchers at  participating federal laboratories and affiliated institutions. These awards include generous stipends ranging from $45,000 - $80,000 per year for recent Ph.D. recipients, and higher for additional experience. Limited graduate level awards are available. These awards provide the opportunity for recipients to do independent research in some of the best-equipped and staffed laboratories in the U.S. Research opportunities are open to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and for some of the laboratories, foreign nationals. 

Four annual review cycles: 
   •  November; Opens September 1; Closes November 1 
   •  February; Opens December 1; Closes February 1 
   •  May; Opens March 1; Closes May 1 
   •  August; Opens June 1; Closes August 1 

Applicants should contact prospective Research Adviser(s) at the lab(s) prior to the application deadline to discuss their research interests and funding opportunities.

Have you thought about applying for an NIH Loan Repayment Programs (LRP) award? Do you know someone that should?

Awardees can receive up to $70,000 of qualified educational debt repayment with a two-year contract.  Applications are open now.

3.  Keck Grad Inst Professional Master's & Bioscience Management Programs

Are you looking for a career in biotech but losing out to candidates with business experience? Keck Graduate Institute's  Postdoctoral Professional Masters (PPM) or  Certificate in Bioscience Management (CBM) can help get you there!

These programs combine your PhD level science with skills in management to prepare you for a high level career in the biotech industry or as an entrepreneur. 

There is still time to apply for Fall 2017! A limited number of FULL scholarships, provided by the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, remain available for CBM students beginning in Fall 2017.  Begin your application  here .

1.  New Networking Association for International Scientists in NYC area

PictureINet NYC (I​nternational Net​working in NYC​) was founded in 2014 and is run by young volunteer scientists. It is an organization that aims to provide support and professional development opportunities for international STEM scientists in the NYC area. It facilitate the connection of scientists, allowing for the sharing of experiences and the formation of a strong international peer network. INet NYC organizes professional, networking and social events that are focused on the challenges and opportunities of international scientists. The group believes that, by creating a local community, INet NYC can assist in finding solutions to career and social concerns that international scientists face.
