Mariann Coogan

Upon retiring after thirty years of teaching ENL (English as a New Language) and LOTE (Languages Other Than English), Mariann Coogan joined the TESOL Program at Stony Brook University. She is currently the Director of TESOL Teacher Preparation and Certification. Prior to serving in this position, she was a Lecturer in the Linguistics Department and Director of Field Experience and Clinical Supervision for TESOL since 2013, guiding TESOL Teacher Candidates through their student teaching experiences and preparing them to enter the exciting and rewarding field of ENL teaching.

She completed her MA in TESOL at Stony Brook University in 1985. She also studied at the Instituto Internacional in Madrid, Spain. She holds New York State Permanent Teacher Certifications in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, Spanish, and Italian. During her tenure at the William Floyd School District, she served as Chairperson for the World Languages Department. In addition to teaching ENL, Spanish, and Italian, she taught dual enrollment courses for Suffolk County Community College and St. John’s University. She served as a mentor for the New York State Mentor Teacher Intern Program for a number of years.

In her community, she serves as an elected official in local government.  She is an avid gardener, reader and tennis player.
