Undergraduate Minors
The SBU School of Communication and Journalism offers three minors:
Communication and Innovation
Mass Communication
Journalism
Each program supports students who are pursuing degrees and careers that would benefit from a deeper understanding of journalism, communication theory, media studies, and the basic skills necessary to craft effective mass messages.
Communication and Innovation
Offered with the College of Business
The minor in Communication and Innovation is designed to give students majoring in science, engineering and related fields necessary workforce skills, including in teamwork and collaboration, interpersonal communication, and creativity, entrepreneurship and leadership.
Program Requirements
To complete the communication and innovation minor, you are required to take:
- Introduction to Business
- Fundamentals of Public Speaking
- Business Communication
- Talking Science
- Team Collaboration
You will also choose one of the following electives:
- Entrepreneurship
- Social Entrepreneurship
- Intellectual Property Strategy
Mass Communication
With a minor in mass communication, you will gain the skills and knowledge to be a more effective communicator, and a more savvy consumer of news and information. You will learn about mass media and media systems, and gain experience in a discipline that is in high demand across academic disciplines, and by employers everywhere.
Program Requirements
To complete the mass communication minor, you are required to take:
- Introduction to Mass Communication
- Fundamentals of Public Speaking
- Mass Communication Law & Ethics
You will also choose three electives, at or above the 300-level.
Journalism
With a minor in journalism, you will gain a basic understanding of journalistic principles and the role journalism plays in society. Whatever your major and career goals, a minor in journalism will make you a better-informed consumer of news, improve your analytical skills, and enhance your communication and writing abilities.
Program Requirements
To complete the journalism minor, you are required to take:
- News Literacy
- Introduction to Mass Media
- Introduction to Digital Journalism
- History of Mass Media
You will also choose three electives, at or above the 300-level.
