Female Perspectives on Entrepreneurship and Research: Recap

On January 25th, Stony Brook University’s Intellectual Property Partners (IPP) hosted a colloquium called Female Perspectives on Entrepreneurship and Research, an important and timely discussion devoted to the impact of diversity and inclusivity on the success of business and research.

“Diverse and varied perspectives are not only central to our institutional mission, but essential to our society as we hope to create a more inclusive, more sustainable and ultimately brighter world,” said Stony Brook University President Maurie McInnis who kicked off the event by virtually presenting opening remarks.

Close to 300 national and international attendees registered for the event to hear six accomplished female researchers, entrepreneurs, and advocates share their vision and experience on female entrepreneurship. Some of the questions covered within this informative 90-minute discussion were: gender equity and SBIR/STTR funding; the relationship of female academics and venture capitalists; promising national programs focused on growing new tech-based ventures for women; how women can use communication to better enhance mentoring relationships; and how the US Department of Commerce can help female academic entrepreneurs.

“Here at Stony Brook, our entire research community believes creating an equitable and integrative work environment to be an essential part of the success of the innovation culture” said Dr. Richard J. Reeder, Vice President for Research. “We are happy to host this extremely meaningful discussion as we want all voices of our community to be heard,” he added. Dr. Reeder went on to introduce the moderator of the panel, Dr. Clovia Hamilton, who teaches ethics, software applications, and industrial operations management at SUNY Korea.  Dr. Hamilton and Donna Tumminello, Associate Director of IPP, worked hard on putting together the panel with the intention that the conversation would lead to a more  profound dialogue on diverse perspectives inspiring creativity, driving innovation and encouraging inclusive economic growth.

The event was recorded and placed on the IPP website
