2018 Global Summer Institute

 

2018 Global Summer Institute2018 marked the second year of the Global Summer Institute (GSI) program at Stony Brook. Approximately 200 students participated in one of three programs to improve their academic English language skills, prepare for the rigors of the U.S. education system, and experience American culture: a three-week Global Certificate Program, a 6-credit Global Academic Program, and an Intensive English Program.
 

This diverse group of students representing 11 countries and 12 partner universities participated in a variety of special lectures from distinguished Stony Brook faculty on topics such as Leadership, the Physics of Sports, the Secrets of Learning English, Film, and Local Marine Wildlife, in addition hearing from President Stanley on the Global Challenges of Infectious Diseases and Provost Bernstein on the Economic History of the United States.

In addition to academics, GSI participants were exposed to local culture with trips to New York City, Alive After Five, Riverhead Outlets, Cupsogue Beach, a Mets baseball game, and a trip to Wicked on Broadway. In addition to these outings, Stony Brook's Global Student Ambassadors provided on-campus activities to help acculturate participants to campus life.
