Chair - Clinical Assistant Professor/Clinical Associate Professor

Required Qualifications

  • Applicants must hold a doctoral degree awarded from an accredited institution.  The doctoral degree is not limited to a doctorate in occupational therapy.
  • At least 3 years of experience in a full-time academic appointment with teaching responsibilities at the postbaccalaureate level.
  • Applicants must have a minimum of 8 years of documented experience in the field of occupational therapy. This experience must include clinical practice as an occupational therapist; administrative experience including, but not limited to, program planning and implementation, personnel management, evaluation, and budgeting and scholarship
  • Applicants must be a New York State (NYS) Licensed occupational therapist or eligible for a NYS license and must hold current certification by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT).
  • Active involvement in the occupational therapy profession and understanding of contemporary occupational therapy practice and key issues in occupational therapy education.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Specialty certifications such as SIPT, NDT (adult or pediatrics), Hand Therapy, or Public Health.
  • Experience with Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) standards
  • Strong management and leadership skills to develop and manage professional faculty and staff in a complex and diverse environment

Responsibilities & Requirements

The School of Health Technology and Management (HTM) at Stony Brook University invites applicants to apply for the position of Chairperson of the Department of Occupational Therapy.  This Clinical Assistant/Associate position is a 12-month, full time non-tenure track faculty position that will provide direct oversight and manage the MS Program of Occupational Therapy that is delivered on both the Stony Brook University East Campus-Health Sciences Center and Stony Brook at the Southampton location. The Chairperson of the Department of Occupational Therapy reports to the Associate Dean for Operations and Academic Programs and the Dean of HTM.

In support of the Department of Occupational Therapy’s mission, the Chairperson is expected to maintain a teaching load and develop scholarship while lending leadership and vision to the department through sound management of fiscal budgets culminating in long-term fiscal stability within the department, strategic growth initiatives, curriculum development and alignment, accreditation, faculty professional development and workload planning. Further, the Chairperson will support a shared sense of community through engagement with all programs within the School of Health Technology and Management.

Specifically, the major responsibilities of the Department Chair include:

  • Provide leadership to achieve the highest possible level of excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service activities of the Department.
  • Coordinate the Department’s educational programs with the faculty, and schedule courses and assign instructors to these courses in consultation with the dean's office.
  • Assess needs, recruit, mentor and evaluate adjunct faculty as needed.
  • Review, develop, and align the program’s curriculum in preparation for the The Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education’s mandate that the entry-level degree requirement for occupational therapists be moved to the doctoral level by July 1, 2027.
  • Maintain and ensure program excellence in compliance with accreditation standards.
  • Set and communicate expectations for faculty workload in the arenas of teaching, scholarship and service.
  • Foster a culture that supports diversity and inclusion among all stakeholders associated with the Department of Occupational Therapy.
  • Conduct annual reviews of Department faculty and staff.
  • Maintain and implement processes for appointment, reappointment, promotion, and tenure of faculty.
  • Catalyze the bridging of both scholarly and educational programs across departments and schools/colleges.
  • Oversee Department finances through planning and administering of the annual budget in consultation with the dean’s office.
  • Lead the recruitment efforts, when needed, for replacement or net growth of faculty and staff, making certain that the diversity goals of the school and college are met.
  • Oversee recruitment, admissions and retainment of students for the MS Program in Occupational Therapy
  • Encourage solicitation of extramural funding.
  • Seek and facilitate external giving and resource development for the program.
  • Serve as a central figure available to address questions, concerns, and communications from students, faculty, staff, parents, guardians, and others with the expectation of a resolution of issues at the department/area level. 

Stony Brook University is located on Long Island and is part of the State University of New York system.  The School of Health Technology and Management’s Department of Occupational Therapy offers a 3-year MS degree in Occupational Therapy and is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE). The program is nationally ranked and provides a dynamic learning experience through interdisciplinary and professional collaborative research, relationships with strong community programs, and opportunities to develop scholarly activities both within the program and the healthcare community. Housed on both the Stony Brook University East Campus-Health Sciences Center and Stony Brook at Southampton location, the program enrolls 60 students per year. Special Notes

This is a non-tenure track position.  FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.  Internal and external search to occur simultaneously.  Anticipated Start Date:  Summer 2019.  Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.  If invited for an interview, candidates will be asked to conduct a professional presentation.  Salary and academic rank are commensurate with qualifications and experience.
