SBU Hosts Alumni-Admissions Ambassador Workshop

In collaboration with the Office of Alumni Relations, the Office of Undergraduate Admissions hosted the first Annual Alumni-Admissions Ambassador Workshop and Dinner Reception at the Hilton Garden Inn on campus in October. This initiative targeted Alumni Ambassadors from across the nation to educate, inspire and engage their involvement in our recruitment activities.

We received an overwhelming response and interest on behalf of these Alumni Ambassadors who eagerly expressed interest in participating in college fairs, student receptions, and alumni-student interviews. We look forward to making this event an annual tradition to increase our recruitment outreach and further engagement of enthusiastic alumni.

ERM Introduces Slate to Stony Brook

The Undergraduate Admissions Office recently acquired licensing to install Slate, a comprehensive CRM (customer relationship management system) used widely across higher education. Implementation began in June 2018, with the support of the Project Management Office and DoIT's Enterprise Applications & Integrations staff, and a new application portal for Stony Brook's Accelerated College Education (ACE) program was launched just three months later.

Other Slate modules have gone live since, including new prospect inquiry forms and a campus visit portal. By fall 2019, Slate will support all undergraduate application reading by counselors, prospect communications, and event management. In addition, the Health Scienes Office of Student Services plans to install Slate for the 2020 admissions cycle.

Tracking Progress, Enabling Success

This academic year, our student service units have worked hard to ensure that every student is supported with clear information about their degree progress and financial aid standing. Technology has been at the forefront of these efforts, with Registrar staff introducing more student-friendly features in Degree Works, new online enrollment/degree verification tools, and, in collaboration with Financial Aid staff, TAP and Excelsior Scholarship certification pages in SOLAR.

Our Health Sciences Office of Student Services also created a new secure process to accept financial aid documents online, reducing service time while working within federal and state regulations.

SPECIAL FEATURE

PROMOTING SOCIAL MOBILITY

Stony Brook's success with social mobility — providing students the ability to rise from a low-income background to a financially secure future — has been well-recognized. Indeed, our ability to offer an affordable education, while supporting students from low-income households through enrichment programs and many other initiatives are a testiment to our University's dedication and strength.

Many efforts to reach and guide potential students from low-income regions begin years before they apply for college admission. Under the direction of Judith Berhannan, Dean of Admissions, our offices bring dozens of bus groups of students from school districts in low socioeconomic areas for information sessions, campus tours, and often an opportunity to meet SBU currents from their districts. Plans are in place to host more than one thousand students in the spring 2019 semester.

A new ERM initiative includes a partnership with the YouVisit Foundation. In the fall semester, our staff visited three New York City high schools — M.S. 223 in the South Bronx, the Gotham Professional Arts Academy in Brooklyn, and Far Rockaway High School in Queens — hosting workshops on on the importance of post-secondary education, and ways students can use the web to search colleges.

ENROLLMENT

"Discover Stony Brook" Event Scheduled for April

The Office of Admissions will host a select group of out-of-state admitted students and parents on Friday, April 5th. As a prelude to our Admitted Student Days, "Discover Stony Brook" will include a panel of SBU experts, campus tour, and dinner reception with key faculty, administrators and current students at the Hilton Garden Inn. This new initiative will increase visibility of the multitude of opportunities and outcomes for undergraduates, and foster a greater sense of community.

College Counselors to Visit SBU

Admissions staff will be hosting a group of approximately 50 out-of-state high school counselors in May in an effort to showcase the dynamic and diverse academic and co-curricular opportunities available to their students. The three-day event will include panel presentations, campus and lab tours, receptions and conversations with key faculty, administrators and current students, as well as an introduction to the scenic Three Village and Southampton regions. Counselors will then share our vibrant story with their students and parents, sparking future enrollment to our campus.

Representing the Health Professions

The Health Sciences Office of Student Services will attend the Division of Undergraduate Education's Major/Minor Event on March 27, from 1:00 PM - 2:20 PM in SAC Ballroom A. We encourage you to refer any students interested in East Campus programs to meet with our staff.

CURRENT INITIATIVES

ACE Program Thrives

Stony Brook's Accelerated College Education (ACE) Program has reached new heights this year, enrolling approximately 2,400 students from 35 high schools across New York, in 40 different Stony Brook courses. The program provides students with the academic challenges of college-level classes within a high school setting, allowing them to begin making degree progress before their first year of college. In some instances, due to the large number of courses offered at some participating high schools, students can earn a semester's worth of credits through the program.

Plans are in place to continue growth in the 2019-20 school year, with several new high schools joining the program and existing schools expanding their offerings. Herricks High School will be joining with classes in French, Italian, Spanish and Chinese. Biological Anthropology will be offered at Riverhead High School, and three American Sign Language courses will be added at East Meadow High School and Oyster Bay-East Norwich High School.

There are two key components to the success of the program. The first is the enthusiasm and dedication of high school teachers in introducing curricula that excites and engages their students. The second is the continued commitment of the Stony Brook faculty in supporting the ACE Program by working with high school teachers and administrators on curriculum alignment and selection.

SBU Named Third 'Best Total-Package College' in the Nation

A newly-released study by Zippia also cited SBU as the best total package in New York State. Using College Scorecard data, their study looked at all accredited colleges by competitive rank, SATs, cost, debt, job prospects, career earnings, diversity, and town. Their summary states, Stony Brook "boasts a great track record when it comes to job prospects, career earnings, and competitiveness."

Student Spotlight

The Program in Public Health is excited to be sending two current MPH students to this year's New York State Public Health Association's annual meeting, at which they will be presenting a poster on their research project. Bianca Franza and Gabriella Zappala, under the supervision of Program Director, Dr. Lisa Benz Scott, have spent the last year looking at how public libraries respond to the mental health needs in their community. They worked on coding libraries into different categories based on the type of programming they offer. They then took this research to look into specific types of programming related to substance use and abuse, as well and how libraries are responding to the opioid epidemic.

Jack Lupfer is a current third-year dental student of Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine (SDM) expected to graduate in May 2020 with a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree. In addition to pursuing his DDS degree, Jack is enrolled in a dual master's degree program, taking night classes to obtain his Master of Business Administration and Public Health degree, which he plans to complete concurrently with dental school. While applying to dental school, Jack was awarded a scholarship through the Health Professions Scholarship Program offered through the United States Navy. After graduating from SDM, he will commission as a Lieutenant and have a minimum 4-year commitment to serve as a dental officer in the US Navy. More
