Stony Brook University Community Support Various Local Holiday Programs

Each year the faculty, staff and students of SBU actively seek ways to support those in need during the holiday season. Support during the holidays comes in many forms including adopting a family, running toy collection drives or providing additional support to those in need. Local organizations the SBU Community supported this past year included: Options for Community Living Inc., Family Service League - Project TOY, Long Island Head Start, and the Sunshine Prevention Center. 

                       

 

Stony Brook University received the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll

Stony Brook University has again been recognized for its community engagement on the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll in four different categories. For Interfaith Community Service, SBU has been named to the Honor Roll with Distinction. SBU was also named to the Honor Roll for the following three categories General Community ServiceEconomic Opportunity, and Education.

LEND Program Launched to Foster Advanced Training in the Field of Caring for Children with Neurodevelopmental Disabilities

$2.2 million federal grant supports the initiative through the School of Social Welfare

STONY BROOK, NY, August 2, 2021 – Stony Brook University is the first institution on Long Island to receive a federal grant designed specifically to train students, professionals, families and self-advocates for the purpose of improving the lives of children and adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and neurodevelopmental disabilities (ND). Called Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and other related Disabilities (LEND), the program at Stony Brook will involve graduate level training through the School of Social Welfare, Department of Psychology, and other Health Sciences programs.

SBU has been re-classified by the Carnegie FoundationCarnegie CEC digital seal

It is a great pleasure to announce that Stony Brook University has been re-classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a recipient of the Community Engagement Classification! The Classification is provided to institutions that have a proven record of community engagement, and revisited every five years to determine if new and returning institutions qualify for this recognition. Stony Brook has    a long history as a community-​engaged institution with various initiatives. Each year SBU students, staff, and faculty take part in opportunities that make meaningful and lasting contributions to communities.  The reach of SBU’s community service has no bounds. Initiatives take place across campus, Long Island, New York City, nationally, and internationally.
