Announcing Two New Fellowships for Stony Brook University Civil Engineering Undergraduate Students

THE CIVIL ENGINEERING GATEWAY FELLOWSHIP

Description:

The goal of the Civil Engineering Gateway Fellowship is to recruit outstanding SBU undergraduate students to pursue an MS degree in civil engineering at SBU with the additional opportunity of linking their graduate education with an industry engineering experience. The fellowship consists of a $5,000 award for use towards tuition costs during one academic year (two semesters). The fellowship will be split and awarded each academic semester. Two awards per year are estimated.

The Gateway Fellowship is in partnership with H2M Engineers and Architects.

Eligibility:

The Civil Engineering Gateway Fellowship will provide support for students pursuing an MS degree in civil engineering. Eligibility criteria:

  1. SBU Civil Engineering undergraduate students are eligible to apply in the fall semester of the academic year during which they will graduate.
  2. Recipients must be graduates of SBU’s Civil Engineering undergraduate program with a graduating overall GPA of 3.25 or higher.
  3. Recipients must be enrolled as a full-time M.S. graduate student in the Department of Civil Engineering. Students may follow either the project or thesis M.S. program option.
  4. Continuation of fellowship support after the first semester is contingent on the recipient maintaining good academic standing in his/her graduate program.

To Apply:

  • Submit a cover letter (indicating academic interests and purpose for graduate study), resume, and unofficial transcripts to the Civil Engineering Department Chair via email.
  • The application period is 5pm (EST) November 1 to 5pm (EST) November 15.

Internship Information:

  • Applicants interested in the summer internship component of this fellowship must give their consent to share their CV with the industry partner for a potential summer internship interview.
  • Applicants may be contacted by the industry partner about an internship opportunity the summer between their BS program and the start of their MS program.
  • It is possible for the student to be selected for the fellowship and not the internship position.
  • If a student is offered both the fellowship and an internship position the student is not obligated to accept the internship position to receive the fellowship award.
  • The engineering internship with the fellowship partner, if it takes place, is independent to the management of the fellowship and completely under the control of the industry partner.

THE CIVIL ENGINEERING RESEARCH EXPERIENCE FELLOWSHIP

Description:

The Civil Engineering Research Experience Award provides high-achieving civil engineering undergraduate students with an early opportunity to become engaged in research with faculty in the Department of Civil Engineering during the summer periods. The award is in the form of a paid research assistantship of $5,000 over 10 weeks. Students are expected to conduct research on a substantive, faculty-guided project, and contribute and participate in related professional development activities. Award winners will not be able to pick their own research project. Two awards per year are estimated.
