Declaring a Major or Minor in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences

All programs in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS) currently limit the number of students accepted. Admission to the University, however, does not guarantee either immediate or future acceptance into the major for which the student applied.

Qualified freshman and transfer students who have indicated their interest in the major on their applications for admission to Stony Brook University may be admitted directly as a degree major or as a pre-major. Pre-majors are placed into the Area of Interest (AOI) program and to be eligible for the degree, they must be admitted to and declare the major.

Major Declaration For Students Entering the University in Spring 2018 or Prior:

Students looking to declare their AOI, change majors within CEAS, or pursue a CEAS major with an undeclared major or a major outside of the CEAS, should refer to the “Acceptance into the Major” section in the Degrees and Requirements page for the intended major of study in the Undergraduate Bulletin. Students should refer to the Undergraduate Bulletin archive for the term/year in which they matriculated into the University, or the term/year in which they enrolled in the first course that applied towards major entry. If the first course towards major entry is taken in Fall 2018 or later, see below for the major entry process/requirements.

Major Declaration For Students Entering the University in Fall 2018 or Later:

Students admitted to other programs within the CEAS follow the same admissions process as students in the AOI program. Students in programs outside of CEAS (non-CEAS students) and double major applicants may apply for admission to the degree program following a separate process (see below).

Area of Interest and Other CEAS Students (excluding double major applicants)

Applications for major admission from AOI and other CEAS students are reviewed twice per year, and must be received by January 5 for Spring admission and June 5 for Fall admission. Students who submit their application on time will be admitted if they meet the major entrance requirements for their respective major of choice (see below).

Students must complete these requirements no later than one year after they enroll in the first course that applies towards major entry. Students must apply for admission by the application deadline immediately following completion of the major entrance requirements, but no later than the one year limit. Admission of AOI students and other CEAS students who apply late will follow the process of Non-CEAS Students and Double Major Applicants.

Non-CEAS Students and Double Major Applicants

Applications for major admission from non-CEAS students and double major applicants are reviewed twice per year and must be received by January 5 for Spring admission and June 5 for Fall admission. Students who do not meet the requirements for major entrance will not be considered. Fulfilling the requirements does not guarantee acceptance. Admission is competitive and contingent upon program capacity.

Students who are planning to pursue a major in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences should consult the Undergraduate Student Office in CEAS for advising.

Minor Declaration for all Applicants:

Applications for minor admission are reviewed twice per year and must be received by January 5 for Spring admission and June 5 for Fall admission. Students who do not meet the requirements for minor entrance (if applicable) will not be considered. Fulfilling the requirements does not guarantee acceptance. Admission is competitive and contingent upon program capacity.

Students who are planning to pursue a minor in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences should consult the Undergraduate Student Office in CEAS for advising.
