Health Education and Healthcare Disparities Symposium

Healthcare practice, outcomes and research disparities adversely that affect underrepresented groups  (including but not limited to, race/ethnicity, physical ability, LGBTQIA+, etc.) has been researched and established. Eliminating disparities in healthcare and health outcomes requires an understanding of the determinants of disease, causes, and effective  prevention and treatment measures.

BLACK MEN IN WHITE COATS

“Black Men in White Coats” is a powerful 80-minute documentary that highlights the lack of Black men in medicine and encourages communities to support high school and college-age Black males in becoming physicians. In addition to the free screening, guests will have the opportunity to discuss the film with our panelists and gain insights into the Black male experience in medicine and learn about programs that Stony Brook offers to help attract Black males to the field of medicine.

THE LONG ROAD TO EQUITY FOR WOMEN IN MEDICINE

For decades, drugs and devices were tested for safety and efficacy only in men, but often reveal devastating results for women.  Join an international panel with very different perspectives on the diseases that plague women and the unjust treatment in the medical field, tracking  the origins of our women’s healthcare gap, and offer ways to improve the medical care of women.
