If you are traveling to the State University of New York at Stony Brook's main campus from…

- By Car: From New York City, take the Long Island Expressway (LIE, I-495) eastbound from the Queens Midtown Tunnel in Manhattan or the Throgs Neck Bridge or Whitestone Bridge in Queens to exit 62, and follow Nicolls Road (Route 97) north for 9 miles. The main entrance to the University is on the left. To find the campus via GPS, enter the address "100 Nicolls Road, Stony Brook, NY 11790."
- By Train: Take the Long Island Railroad's (LIRR) Port Jefferson line from Penn Station in Manhattan to Stony Brook. The LIRR station is at the north end of the campus; bus service to the central campus is provided. Trains to and from Penn generally require transfers at Jamaica or Huntington. Hicksville is also a transfer point on some lines.
John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK)
- By Car: Take the JFK Expressway to South Cargo Road, then get on the Belt Parkway. From the Belt Parkway, take the Cross Island Parkway and then get off at Exit 30E. Merge onto I-495 East in North Hills, and continue on I-495/Long Island Expressway east to exit 62, and follow Nicolls Road north for approximately 9 miles. Continue on Nicolls Road until turning left at Stony Brook University’s main entrance on Shirley Kenny Drive.
- By Train: From JFK Airport, take the AirTrain to Jamaica Station and transfer to the Long Island Railroad’s (LIRR) Port Jefferson Line for the train to Stony Brook.
LaGuardia Airport (LGA)
- By Car: Take the ramp onto the Grand Central Parkway, then take exit 10E-10W towards I-495/Long Island Expressway/Manhattan/Eastern Long Island. Take exit 10E towards Riverhead and merge onto I-495. Take the Long Island Expressway (LIE, I-495) eastbound to exit 62, and follow Nicolls Road north for approximately 9 miles. Continue on Nicolls Road until turning left at Stony Brook University’s main entrance on Shirley Kenny Drive.
- By Train: From LaGuardia Airport, take a taxi or Uber / Lyft to the closest Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) train station: the Woodside train station. From Woodside, take the LIRR’s Port Jefferson line to Stony Brook.
Newark Airport (EWR)
- By Car: Take US-9 from the airport, then keep right at the fork towards I-95N. Merge on to I-95N towards US-46/Lincoln Tunnel. Take exit 16E towards the Lincoln Tunnel and merge onto NJ-495E. Continue through the Lincoln Tunnel and onto NY-495E. Take the exit towards 34 St. Then, take the ramp to 42 St./NY-9A/Uptown/Theater District. Turn right onto the ramp to W 36th St and then turn left onto W 36th St. Take the Queens Midtown Tunnel ramp and continue onto I-495/Long Island Expressway eastbound. Take exit 62, and follow Nicolls Road north for approximately 9 miles. Continue on Nicolls Road until turning left at Stony Brook University’s main entrance on Shirley Kenny Drive.
- By train: Take the Air Train to New Jersey Transit, then take New Jersey Transit to Penn Station (NYC). Take the Long Island Railroad's (LIRR) Port Jefferson line from Penn Station to Stony Brook.
- By Ferry (from Connecticut): Car ferries cross Long Island Sound at Bridgeport, Connecticut to Port Jefferson, Long Island. Take Route 25A west to Nicolls Road, and turn left on Nicolls. The University entrances are the first three intersections you come to. From New London, Connecticut to Orient Point, Long Island, take Route 25A west to Nicolls Road and proceed as above.
