CCWT Researchers Participate in AEESP Distinguished Lecture at NYU Tandon

April 10, 2026 - Research scientists and graduate students from the New York State Center for Clean Water Technology (CCWT) participated in the annual AEESP Distinguished Lecture, hosted by the NYU Tandon School of Engineering in partnership with the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP), on April 10, 2026.

This year’s lecture featured Dr. David L. Sedlak, Plato Malozemoff Distinguished Professor of Environmental Engineering and Director of the Berkeley Water Center at the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Sedlak delivered the keynote address, “Using Nature-Based Treatment to Solve Some of the World’s Water Crises,” highlighting innovative approaches to sustainable water management.

The event brought together faculty, researchers, and students from across the metropolitan region, including participants from the City University of New York, Columbia University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Rutgers University, University at Albany, Montclair State University, and Villanova University.

Six researchers standing in front of research posterCCWT was represented by Research Scientist Dr. Mian Wang, Senior Postdoctoral Associate Dr. Yuyin Tang, and Graduate Research Assistants Xiumei Jian, Fanjian Zeng, Ao Fu, and Yuhang Lu. Dr. Mian Wang delivered a presentation highlighting CCWT’s research on nutrient removal and recovery in decentralized wastewater systems.

During the poster session, CCWT researchers showcased a range of ongoing, innovative work addressing contaminant removal and resource recovery. Featured topics included advanced materials development, novel treatment mechanisms, and evaluation of commercial technologies. Xiumei Jian presented “One-Pot Synthesis of Ca-Rich Granular Biochar for Efficient Phosphate Removal and Recovery from Onsite Wastewater,” Ao Fu presented “Stable Nitrogen Removal under Oxic Conditions by Anammox Granules Treating Low-Strength Wastewater,” and Fanjian Zeng presented “Evaluations of Calcium-Based Media Filters for Phosphorus Removal from Onsite Wastewater.”
