'United Dreams' Origami Project

Health Sciences Library
Artist: Origami Club (led by President Taha Ahmad '25)
April 2025

"This March we invited everyone to fold a crane and decorate a unit of this model however they liked. No one piece was alike, yet each piece fit together seamlessly to make one work of art — a testament to the community we aim to build, one fold at a time."

Native Garden Planting

Life Sciences Building
Artist: Greenhouse Club
October 2024

"The Greenhouse Club was extremely excited to be a part of the native garden planting. Projects like these align with our club’s mission of celebrating the life sciences, benefiting the environment, and connecting our students with nature and with each other. We  hope to maintain the garden for many years to come, and continue to bring positive attention to an area of campus that contributes so much to research and education here at Stony Brook.”

Water Droplet Sculpture

North Reading Room, Melville Library
Artist: Sy Lee ‘24
May 2024

"The premise of this sculpture is a combination of a free diver who's falling from 20ish feet and just contorting himself as he lands to the water, and a water droplet that can either fall from the sky or just splatter from a rainfall. It's about contorting yourself and changing yourself. Choosing whether to be the free diver or the water droplet with no will. For my case, I chose to be the diver ... The North Reading Room is a perfect place for the sculpture to be displayed and permanently installed because the library is a place where people collaborate and learn and discuss and share their knowledge, and that meshes with the idea of contorting and  trying to focus and trying to redirect oneself into a bigger puddle."

'Harmony’s Grasp' Origami Flag

Charles B. Wang Center
Artist: Ellie Mei Lu, ‘27
June 2024

"While creating this design, my wish was to evoke a sense of unity and interconnectedness within the Stony Brook community. Inspired by my cultural roots, I included the yin and yang symbol, representing opposite but complementary forces, as well as the imagery of two hands reaching towards each other. Through this, my wish is for individuals to come together in mutual respect and understanding, embracing diversity and celebrating shared humanity … I envision Stony Brook playing a pivotal role in fulfilling this wish by actively engaging in dialogue, empathy, and mutual support to contribute to building a vibrant and inclusive environment. Ultimately, ‘Harmony's Grasp’ represents Stony Brook's commitment to fostering a culture of unity, understanding, and compassion. It embodies the resilience and shared aspirations of our collective identity, while also honoring the rich history, traditions, and cultural heritage that enrich our campus experience.”

"We wanted this to be a project where a lot of students could get involved and really show what they love about the greenhouse, about Stony Brook. I really liked the idea of bringing more visibility to the greenhouse, because it's such a gem on campus.”

'Le Judicieux' Mural (English translation: The Judicious)

School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS)
Artist: Norah Allam, ‘26
March 2024

"I name all of my pieces in my native tongue, French, and occasionally use the English translation. However, for this particular piece, the French version of the name resonated deeply. ‘Le Judicieux’ encapsulates everything I aimed to convey within my mural about the essence of Stony Brook students. Qualities such as perseverance, wisdom, intelligence and good judgment are all encompassed within this name.”

'Spread Your Wings' Mural

Wall adjoining West Side Dining and LGBTQ* Center
Artist: Xiaohui (Katie) Wang, ‘20
September 2023

"My mission as an artist is completed. The mural will have its own life and its own journey from now on …  The only truth I hold is my memory of Summer 2023, when I lovingly touched every square inch of that wall in sun and in rain, the whisper of wind and rustling of leaves, the change of light, the insects’ chorus and my favorite part: the solitary walk home under the stars when the day is done.”
