Requirements

You MUST have the SUNY International Health Insurance coverage while researching, studying, or teaching at Stony Brook University.

United States Federal Law requires you to have adequate insurance coverage while in the United States in J-1 or J-2 status. If you become a regular paid employee of the University, you can enroll in the coverage offered through the Human Resources office located in Suite 390, Administration. Please note: J-1 scholars must continue to purchase MedEx insurance for the entire period of stay in J-1 status.

The Reliance dental plan is optional for dependents. Enrollees should review the UHC pediatric dental benefits for minor dependents age 18 and under.

How to Enroll

When you arrive, you will automatically be billed in SOLAR for the appropriate insurance. Payment can be made online in SOLAR under "What do I owe?"

Once you are enrolled in the health insurance plan, you will receive information directly from United Healthcare and instructions on how to print your insurance card.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • J-1 scholars who fail to maintain required medical insurance and MedEx insurance for themselves and their J-2 dependents will be terminated in SEVIS and be required to leave the United States.
  • It is the responsibility of the J-1 scholar to maintain insurance coverage throughout their stay in the United States.
  • Program sponsors are required to terminate SEVIS records for any J-1 scholar and their J-2 family members if the required insurance is not maintained.

Note: Medical Evacuation and repatriation insurance coverage is required by J- Exchange Visitor Regulations. It is mandatory for J-1 scholars and their dependents in J-2 status.

You may have an insurance plan through your home country or another source; however, the University health insurance plan is mandatory for you.

No. The mandatory plan does NOT pay for dental procedures like X-rays, fillings, extractions, etc.

It also does NOT pay for vision (eye) exams, eyeglasses, or contact lenses

If you leave the U.S. briefly, you will remain on our health insurance plan if your visa is active.

 

Optional Practical Training Participants (OPT)

Once you graduate from Stony Brook and obtain OPT status, you may continue your international student health insurance plan. You cannot have any lapse of insurance coverage between the mandatory insurance and this extension plan. Email studenthealthinsurance@stonybrook.edu to enroll.

As an OPT participant, you will have a $50 deductible for every NEW medical problem for which you need medical services. This deductible cannot be waived. In addition, you can no longer use Student Health Services once you begin the OPT insurance coverage.

You have 30 days from when your student coverage ends to enroll in OPT coverage.

When an enrollment period has been determined, we will post a charge to your Solar account.  Once you have paid, we will then send your enrollment to be processed.

No, it will be your responsibility to contact us when you want to extend your coverage dates.

Once you have paid, the enrollment process usually takes about a week.

Your insurance card will be emailed to the email address you provide, and will come from Notifications@UHCSR.com (United Healthcare Student Resources).
