Award Eligibility and Criteria
To be eligible for the Distinguished Alumni Award, candidates must meet the following
Nominees must be conferred with a degree from Stony Brook University.
Nominees must have graduated 15 years ago or more.
Alumni cannot currently be employees of the University, voting members of the Board
of Trustees, or current members of the Alumni Board.
Must be living and physically able to participate in person at the award celebrations
(no posthumous nominations).
Nominee cannot be a prior DAA award recipient.
Anyone may submit a nomination for a Stony Brook University alum. Self nominations
are accepted but must be submitted with a letter of endorsement. No self nominations
will be accepted without a supporting letter.
To be eligible for nomination for the Distinguished Alumni Award of Excellence, candidates
must demonstrate the following:
The nominee embodies the values and
core principles and mission of Stony Brook University. For example, he or she may:
carry out research and intellectual endeavors of the highest international standards
that advance knowledge and have immediate or long-range practical significance
provide leadership for economic/business growth, health, technology, and culture for
neighboring communities and their wider geographic region
demonstrate an extraordinary commitment to the traditionally underserved; celebrating
diversity and position themself as a leader in their respective global community.
The nominee must have a proven ability to think critically and act decisively, providing
national leadership in his/her profession, industry or communities in bold new directions.
The nominee must be a person of such integrity that the faculty, staff, students and
alumni of Stony Brook University take pride in and are inspired by his/her work and
