What Is a Hearing Board?

Administrative Hearing Boards consist of 3-5 staff, faculty and students with one seasoned staff or faculty member serving as the Hearing Officer. Hearing Board members allow students the right to be heard by other University community members in situations where they have been accused of violating the Code of Student Responsibility. Hearing Board members are trained and are responsible for reviewing all presented information and determining whether a student has violated a policy and recommending sanctions when applicable. Before being able to serve on a Hearing Board, all members must complete training facilitated by the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards.

What Are the Requirements to be a Student Board Member?

To serve on a hearing board, a student:

  • Must be a current SBU student.
  • Have a cumulative 2.5 GPA (or higher).
  • Cannot be on active Residential or University Probation.

If you meet these minimum requirements and are interested in serving as a student board member please contact our office at communitystandards@stonybrook.edu.

What Are the Benefits of Board Member Participation?

Students who serve on the hearing board gain valuable leadership, critical thinking and reasoning skills, and contribute to the development of responsible student behavior on our campus and in our community.

What Is a Review Panel?

The Review Panel consists of staff members and faculty across the university. Students are unable to serve on The Review Panel. The Review Panel Members are the decision makers in cases involving Sexual Misconduct. During Review Panel Hearings, the members of the panel review all information presented and make a determination as to whether the Respondent has violated the University's policies. Prior to participating in Hearings, Review Panel Members will attend a training by SCCS Staff to learn about sexual violence and confidentiality requirements. Additionally, they also participate in state required trainings, typically through online modules, to ensure they have the most current knowledge of state and federal requirements. Seasoned Review Panel Members may be tasked to be a Hearing Officer or serve on an Appeals Board, which will require additional training.

Is It a Large Time Commitment to Serve as a Board Member?

No. Administrative Hearings and Review Panels are scheduled based upon the number of cases, and availability of board members.  While individual hearings can range from a hour to multiple hours; board members only volunteer for hearings that fit their schedules.
