Biography

Benjamin Luft and a team of medical researchers sequenced the genomes of 22 strains of Borrelia, the bacteria that cause Lyme disease. He and his team have also mapped the protective regions of two important antigens, OspA and OspC. This mapping was predicated on solving the crystal structure and then utilizing both X-ray crystallography and nuclear magnetic resonance to identify the interaction between protective monoclonal antibodies and their targets. This work was the underpinnings for the structure-based vaccine and diagnostic test design.
