Graduate Writing Overview
The Department of Writing and Rhetoric’s graduate unit offers several educational opportunities, including:
1. The Advanced Graduate Certificate in Teaching Writing: Stony Brook University’s Department of Writing and Rhetoric offers the Advanced Graduate Writing Certificate that any SBU graduate students (and non-matriculated grad students) can complete with 15 credits of qualifying courses.
2. Graduate writing support initiatives (for all graduate students across campus): PWR also supports graduate students across campus with their writing needs by using a variety of initiatives. Often organized in collaboration with other academic units or departments, and in collaboration with the Graduate School and University Writing Center, some of these initiatives include: dissertation/thesis writing boot camps, graduate writing groups, graduate writing workshops.
4. Oral/Aural Academic English for graduate students (course-based support): This program is designed to help international doctoral students for whom English is not their first language, funded Masters' students and MBAs raise their English proficiency to a level that enables them to be able to teach, function in the business world, and present in English.
Courses in/for other departments: In addition, DWR graduate faculty teach courses for specific departments, as well as providing consultation and resources/support for graduate students or faculty working with graduate students. Please contact the Graduate Program Director, Dr. Kristina Lucenko, with any questions or requests.
