Writing Center Director

Jennifer Albanese is the Director of the Writing Center and the former Associate Director of the Writing and Rhetoric Program, where she has taught for 24 years. She has developed workshops and writing courses for the Graduate Chemistry program, the IACS, and the Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University.

Assistant Director

Sara is faculty in the Program in Writing and Rhetoric. Her research focuses on the intersection of biopolitics, neoliberalism, and ecocriticism in contemporary fiction. When she isn't reading abstruse theory or writing about clones, she pretends to be funny on Twitter and unironically watchesArnold Schwarzenegger movies.

Brian Eberle is the Graduate Assistant for Graduate Writing Support. A PhD candidate in the Department of English, his research focuses on the relationship between space, historical memory, and literary representation in 20th-century Anglophone fiction. He has taught literature and composition courses since 2013 and has worked in writing centers since 2011. In his spare time, he enjoys hiking and trying to placate the Duolingo owl. Graduate Student Director— WRT 102 EGL 204 NARRATIVE WRITING

Dan is a first-year graduate student in the English MA program. He was previously a TA for EGL 204, and recently completed an honors thesis focused on the relationship between science fiction and culture with regard to literature and media. Dan has experience with sci-fi, realism, dramatic literature, and researched arguments. You might recognize him from the hit Instagram series "Tutor Tips!" Kira is part of SoMAS, majoring in Coastal Environmental Studies with a minor in Environmental Engineering. Much of her academic writing centers on environmental research and on communicating those concepts to a broad audience. In her downtime she enjoys playing soccer with friends and creative writing, often inspired by films and music.

Harrison is a graduate student in the MBA program, but graduated this past May cum laude with a B.A. in Environmental Studies and a minor in both Biology and Geospatial Science. Though he has now passed on the torch, Harrison led the SBU Crew team as president for the past two years and has been involved in numerous facets of on-campus research including URECA scholarship. He currently works at the SBU Southampton campus in Dr. Gobler's marine science laboratory as a project aide. He's been a tutor at the writing center since the fall of 2023.

Emily is a third-year undergraduate student pursuing a BS in Health Science with a minor in Professional Writing. She is involved in various departments across campus and enjoys singing, reading, and relaxing (whatever that means). Her ultimate beloved pastime is collecting trinkets in which her most favored are displayed for all the world to admire.

Kamala is a student in the Master’s in Teaching: English program. Throughout her academic career, she has written extensively on concepts of identity, gender, and post-humanism. She is most familiar and versed in expository and narrative writing, having hosted several workshops and events in relation to, and about, personal statements. Additionally, Kamala is familiar with speech writing, having virtually presented at the United Nations CSW and even gave her departmental convocational speech at graduation. Durning her undergraduate career, she led multiple grant-funded research projects through URECA. Kamala hopes to go on to get her PhD while teaching secondary education. Beyond the Writing Center, Kamala is the Graduate Coordinator for the Office of Commuter Services on campus, an amateur potter, a lover of nature, and a sci-fi fan.

Petrina is a first year MA student in the English Department and Graduate Coordinator for Student Engagement Activities at Stony Brook. She was the Student Assistant Director at the Writing Center from Fall 2024 to Spring 2026. She was also previously a teaching assistant for WRT 102, SBU 101, and EGL 301, and hopes to pursue teaching ELA to secondary education English as a New Language (ENL) students. When she’s not tutoring at the Writing Center or organizing on campus events, Petrina loves to read, crochet, watch Halloween movies, and go to museums.

Ansh is a senior majoring in Computer Science and in Applied Mathematics and Statistics. His primary career interests lie in information security, and he plans to pursue graduate education in this field. He has written about computer science, business, and medicine throughout his career, and he has extensive experience writing case reports, research papers, white papers, and professional applications. In the past, he has been involved in computer science research (machine learning, cybersecurity), business research (market analysis, competitor analysis), and medical research (neuroscience, stem cells, oncology). Ansh has also previously been a teaching assistant for CSE 215.

Chiho is a sophomore majoring in Marine Sciences with a minor in Writing and Rhetoric. Along with being a tutor for the Writing Center, she is a Fellow for SCH 101, International Relations Chair for the Japanese Student Organization, and a secretary for SBU Audubon, which is a club dedicated to spreading awareness about birds and bird conservation. Chiho plans to pursue a career that incorporates marine conservation and research with writing, whatever that may entail, but her grand dream in life is to be an author and own a tiny bookshop, preferably with a bakery next door. When she has free time, she can be seen hanging out with friends, enjoying the comfort of her dorm, making progress on her novels or reading, and listening to wildly different types of music.

Mary is a senior at Stony Brook University, majoring in Biology. She is also minoring in Writing and Rhetoric. She has experience in speech writing/public speaking, academic and medical research, creative writing, and argumentative essays. She hopes to attend PA school next fall, and continue onto a career in medicine that is focused on surgery or emergency medicine. In her free time, Mary is a competitive rock climber and gym enthusiast, model, and a lover of a good book.

Maggie is pursuing a PhD in English literature with a focus on the early modern period in western Europe. She holds a bachelor's degree in psychology and English. And an MA in the Humanities from UChicago. She served as a writing center coordinator at the University of San Diego. She was a ghostwriter between her MA and PhD, and that work is in production with a publishing company. She is the president of the Graduate English Society and the graduate faculty liason. She has in the past been the coordinator of Stony Brook's English Graduate Conference, GES secretary, and GES treasurer. She is the technology coordinator for English graduate students. She earned a fellowship for transitioning the English department to meet ADA compliance this past summer. And her disseration research focuses on the method of producing pleasure in early modern poetry and poetics. In her free time (which doesn’t exist), she enjoys drawing botanical charts and thrifting.

Melinda is a junior English Teacher Preparation major with a minor in Globalization Studies and International Relations in the Combined BA/MA program. She is the Public Relations for SBU Taandava, the classical Indian dance team on campus. She hopes to teach high school students and share her love of literature. In her free time, she loves to watch movies, do nails and dance!

Arleigh is a second-year PhD student in English with a focus on contemporary adaptation studies, specifically the exchange among novels, films, and plays. She has tutored in the Writing Center at the University of Southern Mississippi, where she also taught English composition classes including analysis, argument, and research writing. At SBU, she has TA'd for EGL130 and 217. In her spare time, she enjoys going to the movies, running, and convincing everyone to read The Secret History by Donna Tartt.

Angelyse is a senior majoring in English with a minor in Hispanic Languages with plans to get a masters in Higher Education Administration. She has experience with different forms of writing such as research papers, personal narratives and was a T A for SBU 101. She is a member of the ANZ club on campus and loves to read on her free time.

Sam is a student in the English Honors Program with a minor in Writing and Rhetoric, currently completing her undergraduate honors thesis. She is a recent recipient of the URECA Summer Research Grant, which she utilized to conduct archival work for her honors project, and was a presenter at Stony Brook’s Humanities Research Day in the Spring 2025 semester. Sam was also a teaching assistant for WRT 102. As a former Culture Editor and writer for The Stony Brook Press, and the Poetry Editor for the Sandpiper Review, she is well versed in narrative and creative writing. When she has free time, Sam is most likely reading or frolicking about.

Matt is a junior majoring in English and minoring in Political Science. He previously served as a T.A for SBU 101 and is excited to share his love for writing with others at SBU. Post college, Matt hopes to center his career around helping others and fostering a love for reading. In his free time, he enjoys tending to his letterboxd account, attending his favorite musical festivals, and spending time with those closest to him!

Faiz is a junior majoring in Physics. He has written articles on veterinary medicine and the expansion of the universe for the Young Investigators Review, Stony Brook's scientific journal. He is currently serving as the outreach chair for the National Society of Black Physicists, which allows him to conduct physics demos for middle school and high school students. In his free time, Faiz loves to read, play video games, and practice archery.

JOURNALISM MASS COMMUNICATIONS LITERATURE REVIEW PERSONAL STATEMENT WORKSHOP

Kevin is a senior majoring in English Education with a minor in Creative Writing and Journalism. He has written about race relations, intersectionality, news, sports coverage, literature reviews, and educational research throughout his college career. Kevin has vast experience writing for multimedia such as web, social media, radio, and print. His writing has been published in The Statesman and WSHU. Kevin is also Vice President of Reading Is Fun (RIF), a club dedicated to helping international students improve their English. He is also a sport, news, and art writer for The Statesman. In his free time, you can find Kevin either at the gym, reading comic books, or cheering on the New York Giants or Brooklyn Nets!
