Subject: Welcome, Seawolves! What You Need to Know for Fall 2025

Dear Seawolves,

Welcome to the Fall 2025 semester! Whether you're joining us for the first time or continuing your undergraduate or graduate studies, we're excited to have you as part of our vibrant and diverse community. This is a time to explore new opportunities, strengthen connections, and make the most of all that Stony Brook has to offer, both inside and outside the classroom.

Before you read more, take a look at this short video in front of our new SBU landmark letters!

RESPECT AND CARE
As Seawolves, we support each other, celebrate our diverse backgrounds, and embrace opportunities for personal growth, so it is important that we respect each other’s views and opinions. At Stony Brook, we value free exchange of ideas, inclusion, and diversity, and we uphold our commitment to maintaining the dignity and the fair treatment of all members of our community. We also expect everyone to know and follow the rules and policies in place to ensure the health and safety of our campus community.

STUDENT SUPPORT TEAM
Don’t know where to get help? Are you experiencing a challenging situation and need a listening ear, advice, or some direction? Make your first stop the Student Support Team! They can help problem-solve with you and make referrals as needed to support your success at Stony Brook. For more information, visit stonybrook.edu/studentsupport. For help, call (631) 632-7320 or email student_supportteam@stonybrook.edu.

GET CONNECTED BY GETTING INVOLVED
Get involved by joining one or more of our over 500 undergraduate and graduate clubs and organizations. We are hosting two involvement fairs where you can connect with the student groups of your choice. Don’t forget to download the CORQ app for information about campus programs and events.

Make sure you take advantage of Campus Life Time, a dedicated period when no classes are scheduled on Mondays and Wednesdays from 12:30-1:50pm, to dive into campus activities and participate in clubs and organizations.

You can find a list of all currently recognized organizations on SB Engaged. Organizations without pages on SB Engaged are not recognized and are not in good standing with the University.

Whether you choose to become a leader in a club or organization, volunteer or do community service, complete an internship, or conduct research with a faculty member, pick something and strengthen your candidacy when applying for jobs or future graduate study.

PART-TIME JOB AND INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
Part-time jobs are available both on and off campus for students, and are the perfect way to earn money while gaining transferable skills for the future. Log into Handshake to check out available jobs and opportunities.

The Career Center hosts multiple job fairs during the semester, including the On-Campus Job and Internship Fair. Details on all upcoming fairs can be found in Handshake, along with prep events held by the Career Center. Students can also make appointments with Career Coaches to discuss fair preparation, review resumes, and more. For more information, visit the Student Employment website.

WHERE ELSE CAN I GO FOR HELP?
Academic rigor, financial worries, relationship problems, and other concerns may cause stress and an inability to focus. We have many resources available to assist you. Please reach out for help and talk to someone you can trust.  We’re here to help you succeed!

We’re excited to see all that you’ll accomplish this year and encourage you to take full advantage of the opportunities and support available to you. Whether you're just starting out or returning to campus, know that you are a valued member of the Stony Brook community—and we’re here to help you thrive.
Be on the lookout for a follow-up message soon with additional details about university resources and policies that are important to your success and well-being.
Wishing you a great start to the semester. Go Seawolves!
Sincerely,
Rick Gatteau, PhD
Vice President for Student Affairs
