THE SS4A PROGRAM
Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) is a federal grant program run by the U.S. Department of Transportation. It helps communities across the country develop and carry out plans that prevent the most serious crashes on their roads. Through this program, Stony Brook University received a planning grant to develop a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan for the campus and surrounding roads.
WHAT THE PLAN WILL DO
- Analyze crash data to find where crashes happen, who is involved, and why.
- Listen to the campus community and neighbors about where roads feel unsafe and what would help improve conditions.
- Recommend specific improvements, from crosswalks, lighting, and signals to redesigned intersections, where they are needed most.
- Study better connections between West and East Campus
- Look at every way people get around: walking, biking, buses and transit, shuttles, bike shares and scooters, cars, and emergency and service vehicles.
- Coordinate with New York State, Suffolk County, and neighboring communities, which own and operate many of the roads surrounding the campus.
- Deliver a roadmap of short- and long-term actions, with the steps and funding sources needed to carry them out.
This is a planning effort, so it does not include construction. Instead, it produces the roadmap that construction would follow: specific recommendations, priority locations, and the steps and funding sources needed to carry them out.
THE STUDY AREA
The plan covers roads, paths, and crossings on West Campus, East Campus, and the Research & Development Park, plus the major roads that border and connect them: Nicolls Road (County Route 97), Stony Brook Road, Route 25A, and Route 347. It also considers connections beyond campus, like the Setauket–Port Jefferson Station Greenway and nearby bike routes.
