The Office of Research Compliance (ORC) supports and promotes ethical research practices at Stony Brook University. The ORC and the SBU research community partner together to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations as well as University policies.
Compliance Programs
The Human Research Protection Program provides leadership and oversight on matters related to the protection of human subjects participating in research.
Stony Brook University (SBU) may rely on an external IRB of another institution or organization, or an independent (commercial) IRB, for review and approval of some human research activities.

The Research Integrity Officer (RIO) is responsible for the oversight of SBU's Research Misconduct Policy.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH), in NOT-OD-10-019, defines responsible conduct of research "as the practice of scientific investigation with integrity - it involves the awareness and application of established professional norms and ethical principles in the performance of all activities related to scientific research."
The Stem Cell Research Oversight (SCRO) Committee provides oversight of all issues including sensitive ethical, legal, scientific, and policy issues related to the derivation and research use of embryos and stem cells.
