Stony Brook University Department of Psychology

The Stony Brook University Department of Psychology was founded in 1960 and is one of the university’s largest and strongest programs.

The Department offers two undergraduate degrees, a BA and a BS in psychology, a terminal MA in psychology, and doctoral degrees in four areas of psychology: Cognitive ScienceClinical Psychological ScienceIntegrative Neuroscience, and Social & Health Psychology.

The Psychology Department is a highly ranked department, whose faculty are distinguished, well-funded, and productive scholars.   • All of Psychology’s PhD offers of admission include a stipend and tuition scholars. To receive full consideration for additional fellowships, domestic applicants to the Cognitive Science and Integrative Neuroscience Programs should submit by 12/15.

Marci award in Barcelona May 2026

On May 30 in Barcelona, Marci Lobel (Distinguished Professor) accepted the 2026 Lifetime Achievement Award for Mentoring from the Association for Psychological Science (APS). From the commendation, this award "recognizes the enormous impact you have had in shaping the future directions of psychological science by fostering the careers of your students and colleagues. Your distinguished record of training, teaching, advising, and encouraging those who go on to have productive and influential research careers is the reason you have been selected for this award." Dr. Lobel recently completed her appointment as a Distinguished Fulbright Scholar at Masaryk University Medical School in Brno, Czech Republic. She taught a course in The Psychology of Women's Health and led PRESTO-CZ, the first major study of stress and health in pregnant Czech Women. Finally, she was also the Closing Plenary speaker at the APS Teaching Institute with her talk entitled "Cultivating Success: Advancing Inclusive Mentorship and Institutional Responsibility"

July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, established in 2008 to honor the late author, teacher, and advocate Bebe Moore Campbell, who worked tirelessly to break the stigma of mental illness within marginalized communities.

Dr. Stacey Scott (Professor) has been awarded Fellow status by the Gerontological Society of America. This is one of the highest recognitions in the field of gerontology and reflects Dr. Scott’s significant scholarly contributions, professional leadership, and influence on the field. Dr. Scott will receive a fellow plaque and pin at the Behavioral and Social Sciences Presidential Symposium and Recognition Event on November 5, at 4:30 PM at the GSA Annual Scientific Meeting. She will also be honored with special recognition at the GSA Fellows, ESPO, and International Reception.
