Tuition Benefits & Other Educational
Support for Employees Policy

Policy Statement & Background:

The State University of New York (SUNY) Board of Trustees has established a policy of tuition assistance for eligible employees of SUNY and the Research Foundation. Stony Brook University (University) is committed to this policy by overseeing a tuition assistance program and maintaining a list of other educational support opportunities. 

Scope

This policy applies to West Campus, Health Sciences, Southampton and School of Medicine employees.

Policy:

Tuition benefits are available to eligible employees, subject to availability of funds and/or space. This may include assistance for approved coursework. Human Resources provides assistance with the administration of the following programs: 

• B-140W Tuition Assistance Program: Full-time State & Research Foundation (RF) Employees attending a SUNY or Empire State College are eligible to apply for this tuition assistance program. For more information, visit B-140W.

• UUP Tuition Waiver: This program is available to UUP members attending a SUNY or Empire State College and is dependent upon space being available. Tuition waivers are provided only for courses offered by State-operated campuses of the State University of New York. One course each fall and spring semester up to a maximum of 3 credits per semester may be waived.  For more information, visit UUP Tuition Waiver (Space Available Program).

Other educational support may be available to eligible part- and full-time employees, subject to availability of funds and/or space. This may include reimbursement of exam costs, certain training programs, or the forgiveness of eligible loans (e.g. Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program). Detailed information on these opportunities is available on the Human Resources website. 

Employees also may apply for educational support from programs financed under negotiated agreements. Employees who are members of specific bargaining units may check with their unions for opportunities (e.g. UUP, CSEA, PEF, PBANYS, and NYSCOPBA) or more information may be found here.
