Dissertation in Political Philosophy:

Female Voices in the Sophoclean Tragedies. A Critique of the Notion of Public Speech in Fifth Century Athens (Defense: April 23, 2018)

Advisor: Sandro Chignola

Committee: Gennaro Carillo, Mauro Farnesi Cammellone, Maurizio Merlo

External Referees: Johanna Hanink (Brown University), Rossella Saetta-Cottone (CNRS, Paris)

Dissertation Abstract:

Public spaces in fifth century BCE Athens - such as the theater, the assembly, and the courthouse – were mostly restricted to men’s speeches. My dissertation examines the speeches pronounced by the female protagonists in Sophocles’ plays, with the aim to investigate the specific construction of tragic language as gendered. By adopting the lens of gender, this philosophical investigation offers an original critique to the traditional understanding of “public speech” in classical Greece. In particular, I focus on three institutionalized forms of discourse: the legal and judiciary discourse, the agon, and the lamentation.
