Anthony Steinbock obtained his doctorate from Stony Brook University (1993) and studied
at L’École des hautes études en sciences sociales, Paris, France supported by the Bourse Chateaubriand (1989 – 1990), and at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Bochum, Germany on a grant from
the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst [DAAD] (1987 – 1989). He has taught at the University of New Hampshire, Southern
Illinois University Carbondale, and has held visiting professorships at several international
institutions.
His published books include: Knowing by Heart: Loving as Participation and Critique (Evanston, IL: Northwestern University Press, 2021), It’s Not about the Gift: From Givenness to Loving (Rowman & Littlefield Int., 2018), Limit-Phenomena and Phenomenology in Husserl (Rowman & Littlefield Int., 2017), Moral Emotions: Reclaiming the Evidence of the Heart (Northwestern, 2014; 2015 Symposium Book Award), Phenomenology and Mysticism: The Verticality of Religious Experience (Indiana, 2007/2009; 2009Edward Goodwin Ballard Book Prize in Phenomenology), Home and Beyond: Generative Phenomenology after Husserl (Northwestern, 1995). He is the translator of Edmund Husserl, Analyses Concerning Passive and Active Synthesis: Lectures on Transcendental Logic (Kluwer, 2001). His current book projects include Vocations and Exemplars: The Verticality of Moral Experience.
He serves as editor-in-chief, Continental Philosophy Review, and as general editor, Northwestern University Press “SPEP” Series. He is the director of the Phenomenology Research Center.
