Foreign Language Requirement (LANG)
Students in the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business, School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, and School of Journalism must demonstrate foreign language proficiency to graduate by satisfying the Skill 3/LANG requirement. Students in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences are exempt from this requirement.
Students can satisfy the LANG requirement by:
- Completing the second semester of an elementary language course (e.g., 112) with a grade of C or higher, or,
- Completing an intermediate or higher-level language course with a grade of C or higher.
Foreign Language Placement Exam
Taking the FLPE
Students with prior experience in a language—through formal study or as a heritage speaker—should take the Foreign Language Placement Exam before enrolling in a language course.
The exam determines the course level that best matches a student’s current proficiency and identifies students who have already satisfied the Skill 3/LANG requirement.
Students who have already fulfilled the language requirement through another approved method do not need to take the placement exam.
