Graduate Student Hardship Fund

Launched as part of the President's Fast Impact Funding Initiative, the Graduate Student Hardship Fund has been a vital resource for students experiencing financial emergencies. With 61 awards distributed from 65 applications, totaling approximately $103,719.24, the fund addressed critical needs across multiple categories:

Bridge Funding Initiatives

RPA Bridge Funding

Provided temporary bridge funding to support Research Project Assistants (RPAs) when externally sponsored awards could not accommodate contracted funding increases through re-budgeting.

Emergency Bridge Funding for Canceled Grants

Provided limited institutional funding to support graduate students and postdocs whose grant-funded positions were affected by termination of an external award.

Scaling Inclusive Graduate Education Environments

This initiative sought to better understand the factors that shape inclusive and supportive research environments for graduate students in STEM at Stony Brook University. Through surveys, program data, and focus groups, the project aimed to identify strengths and areas for improvement and use those findings to inform data-driven changes to graduate programs and research practices.
