Radiation Safety Lab Renovation
Department
Campus Planning, Design & Construction (CPDC)
Overview
This project transformed an outdated, unused X-ray generator laboratory in the Life
Sciences Building into a modern training and calibration facility for Stony Brook’s
Radiation Safety program. The space underwent a complete renovation, including the
removal of obsolete X-ray equipment and specialized infrastructure, along with new
finishes, lighting, plumbing and work surfaces.
Key Highlights
- Repurposed an unused X-ray laboratory into a modern Radiation Safety training and calibration facility
- Removed obsolete X-ray equipment and lead-lined doors to prepare the space for its new use
- Installed new epoxy flooring, ceiling and lighting systems
- Added a new sink and work surface to support training and equipment calibration
- Rehabilitated existing campus space to support current program and operational needs
Impact
Radiation Safety, a program within Environmental Health & Safety, supports the safe
use and management of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation for medical and research
applications. The renovated laboratory provides a dedicated space for calibrating
radiation detection equipment used by Stony Brook University, Stony Brook University
Hospital and local municipal response organizations. These calibrations help support
regulatory compliance and requirements associated with the University’s New York State
Radioactive Materials License.
Project Completed Summer 2026
