Stony Brook University’s Pollinator Garden

Department
Campus Operations & Maintenance (COM)
Overview
The 2026 Pollinator Garden created a native pollinator landscape at Stony Brook University
as a living tribute commemorating President Goldsmith’s inauguration. Designed as
a permanent and evolving space, the garden transformed an underutilized area into
a vibrant habitat that supports pollinators while inviting ongoing participation from
the campus community.
Key Highlights
- Transformed the raised garden bed in front of the Student Activities Center into a native pollinator garden
- Prioritized native and locally sourced plants to support biodiversity and sustainability
- Designed staggered bloom cycles to provide continuous seasonal forage for pollinators
- Aligned with and amplified the university’s Bee Campus USA certification
Impact
The pollinator garden enhanced campus life while reinforcing the university’s commitment
to environmental stewardship. It created hands-on learning opportunities for students,
a research and instructional resource for faculty, and a shared point of pride for
staff and visitors. Beyond campus, the garden contributes to local ecological health
by supporting bees, butterflies, and other pollinators critical to resilient ecosystems.
