Overview

The Multi-Disciplinary Engineering and Neuro AI Institute Building will deliver a new 81,500 gross square foot facility combining the Multi-Disciplinary Engineering (MDE) program with the Neuro AI Institute at Stony Brook University. The building will provide flexible research laboratories, teaching spaces, student collaboration areas, and administrative offices for the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences while advancing computational AI research. The design aligns with New York State sustainability goals and targets net-zero carbon compliance under Executive Order 22.

• Flexible wet and dry research laboratories and a shared core instrumentation lab
• Prominent first-floor teaching laboratory supporting the MDE program
• Neuro AI computational labs, collaboration hub, and faculty, postdoctoral, and graduate student offices
• Dean’s suite, undergraduate student offices, maker space, and informal student interaction areas
• Sustainable design including a geothermal GeoExchange system and photovoltaic canopies over a 140-space parking lot

Impact

Students will benefit from modern teaching laboratories, maker spaces, and collaborative environments that support hands-on engineering education and exposure to emerging AI technologies. Faculty and researchers will gain access to flexible, shared laboratory space designed to foster multidisciplinary research and innovation.

The facility will also strengthen operations within the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences by providing updated leadership and student support offices. More broadly, the project positions Stony Brook University as a leader in Neuro AI and multidisciplinary engineering while demonstrating the university’s commitment to sustainable, future-ready infrastructure.
