Test Credits
Students may be eligible to receive college credit for standardized external examinations such as AP, CLEP, IB, or A-Levels. To determine eligibility, have your official test scores sent directly to Stony Brook University’s Undergraduate Admissions Office. Please note that test credits cannot be accepted from high school transcripts, and a maximum of 30 examination credits may be applied toward your degree.
Students may earn advanced placement credit by completing the appropriate College Board AP examination with a score of 3 or higher.

- Request that your AP scores be sent to Stony Brook University’s Undergraduate Admissions Office through College Board (school code: 2548).
Stony Brook University awards credit for CLEP subject examinations only. Credit is not granted for CLEP general examinations.
- Credit is not awarded for CLEP language exams in a language previously studied.
- Students may not take a CLEP exam in a subject that serves as a prerequisite for a course already completed or that duplicates prior coursework.
- Scores must be equivalent to a grade of C or higher.
- Request official CLEP scores through College Board.
Stony Brook University awards six credits for International Baccalaureate Higher Level (HL) exams in year-long courses with a score of 5 or higher.
Official scores must be sent by the International Baccalaureate Organization.directly to Stony Brook University’s Undergraduate Admissions Office.Stony Brook University awards up to eight credits per subject for A-Level (Advanced) exams in year-long courses with grades equivalent to a U.S. C or better.
- Only official certificates of results are accepted; provisional certificates cannot be used.
- Your name and identifying information must match your Stony Brook University record.
- If you need replacement certificates or result verification, use the appropriate exam board resources.
- Email your Original Cambridge A-Level Exam Certificate or Electronic Statement of Results to: transfer_office@stonybrook.edu.
- Follow the instructions provided for submitting exam grades.
- Once verified, transfer credit will be processed.

Bring your Official Certificate of Results to Academic & Transfer Advising Services. Staff will copy the document and return the original immediately.
