Write Your Book

In their senior year, students work one-on-one with a faculty mentor to complete a creative thesis. For many students, this becomes their first book. Recent BFA alums have published excerpts from their theses in a number of prestigious literary journals including BOMB, Furrow, The Los Angeles Review, The Mid-Atlantic Review, and Smokelong Quarterly.

Join Our Community

The Department of Creative Writing, Film and TV gathers for author and student readings, film screenings, publishing workshops, and other events to support and celebrate artists. Students can also get involved in editing the literary journal Sandpiper or by serving in leadership positions in the Creative Writing Salon.

Land the Job

Students from our publishing practicum have gone on to internships at Atria Books and James Lane Post. Many BFA alums continue onto graduate and professional schools including prestigious Library Science Master's programs. A number of BFA alums have gone on to continue their creative writing studies at top-ranking MFA programs.

About the Creative Writing Major

The BFA is a highly selective creative writing program for the student serious about the art and craft of writing. Modeled on Stony Brook's renowned MFA in Creative Writing, the BFA offers the rigor of graduate-level coursework in a supportive close-knit community of working writers.

Every BFA student graduates with a complete creative project in the genre of their choice. One-on-one thesis mentorship, a cohort of dedicated peers, robust academics, and a thriving creative community provide an intimate liberal arts experience alongside the resources of a top-tier research university.

Creative writing students graduate prepared to enter a rapidly evolving job market; no other field requires the level of imagination, organization, flexibility, and resilience it takes to be a writer. The needs of the job market are unpredictable but if you can write a book, you can do anything.
